Parental psychological control: a brief review of the literature
Keywords:
parental psychological control, Self-Determination Theory, antecedents, outcomesAbstract
The scientific literature is full of studies demonstrating that parental use of manipulative educational strategies, such as love withdrawal or guilt induction, may be associated with maladaptive developmental outcomes in children, adolescents, and young adults. These dimensions of parenting can be grouped within the construct of parental psychological control, which despite having been widely studied, is still little used. For this reason, the goal of this synthesis is to describe parental psychological control, its dimensions, associations with developmental outcomes, and the current theoretical framework within the Self-Determination Theory.
