Abstract

Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques (NIBS) have been applied in the evaluation of cortical excitability, in mapping of cortical functions in healthy individuals, in disease diagnosis, and with therapeutics purposes. One of the most widely used NIBS techniques is the transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS generates brief magnetic fields that can induce electric currents in the brain. TMS is used to modulate brain regions of neurologic and psychiatric patients to provide new treatment strategies. In this review, we summarize: (1) TMS characteristics and protocols; and (2) the therapeutic potential of TMS in the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders.
